The Oliver+S Hopscotch Shirt. The sizing on this pattern runs very small. Her patterns usually run big (similar to BabyGap). This one is actually small. It's one of her newer patterns, so maybe she has adjusted the sizing? The pattern is well done, so I think it could be made on a regular sewing machine. It's the first Oliver+S pattern I've done where she talks about using a serger.
I bought this pattern when I was struggling with making those stretchy dresses. I thought I might find some help with sewing the knit fabrics. I was right.
Spending $16 on a pattern is, in fact, insane. So let me clarify why I think her patterns are worth every penny. First, I get a sewing lesson every time I use them. Her instructions are so thorough and helpful, and I always learn something about sewing or garment making. Second, her patterns make real clothes. They have details that frustrate the rushing, impatient, "I don't have time for this" girl in me - but they are always worth it.
And about fabric. I buy the majority of my fabric at a warehouse called Jomar. The place is not fancy (cement floor and fluorescent lighting), but I love it. They have everything from designer prints to velvet to vintage upholstery (gasp! loveliness!), but the best part is the big section of fabric that is $1 a yard. That means that this shirt cost $0.75, and the skirt that goes with it came to a big $1. You have to be careful there - watch the fabric being rolled out, look for stains/imperfections, and ask for a clean piece of fabric. They're good about it, and they'll often throw in the dirty piece for free.
